- Why We Fight -

Support for the Iraq War has plummeted over the last two years due to the lack of success and the rising casualty numbers. With an increase in troop levels, a debate has been ferociously ignited within the political arena, as well as the general public. Most in America fail to realize what Iraq represents and most of the media coverage fails to characterize the conflict correctly. This debate centers on the question of whether the United States should give up and withdraw from Iraq or should the United States do whatever it takes to be victorious in Iraq ? Unfortunately, the American people fail to look at the facts and the historical significance of the current conflict.

As an American, I am extremely concerned about the current environment surrounding the Iraq War. The majority of Americans are quickly turning against the war effort and believes it is better to cut our losses, give up, and bring our troops home. What has happened to the American people? We want everything, yet we are willing to sacrifice nothing. We see the grim news coming from Iraq and we want to quit. Well, I need to ask the American people, what would have happened if we gave up and quit during the American Revolution when we lost 4,435 soldiers from April 1775 to October 1781? Where would we be if we gave up during D-Day where we lost 4,900 soldiers in a single day? Where would we be if we gave up after we lost 6,503 soldiers in one month during the battle of Iwo Jima ? So far, we have lost 3,335 soldiers in Iraq since the war began over four years ago and while every soldier’s life is precious, this is the brutal reality of war. If we fight wars based on casualty figures, we are doomed to fail in any action we undertake.

Another important factor people are hardly taking into consideration is what will happen if we fail in Iraq . Democrats continue to use the term “phased redeployment/redistribution of troops" and all that “phased redeployment" and “redistribution of troops" means is withdrawal. Why don’t the politicians explain to the American people what will happen if we lose? If the United States loses this war, its power and influence, throughout the world, will be significantly diminished. The United States , as we know it, will no longer exist. Throughout the world, terrorism will increase ten-fold. Iran will become the superpower of the Middle East . North Korea will be emboldened to press on with their nuclear program. We will have given every single nation a blueprint on the way to defeat America, which will make it that much tougher to win any future wars. This is fact that cannot be argued with. So can failure possibly be an option?

The United States must remain steadfast in its causes because no nation has contributed more to humanity. The United States is a force for good in this world and must always be perceived in that manner. A victory in Iraq will show the world the United States is a force to be reckoned with. A victory in Iraq will once again put fear into the hearts of the enemies of the United States . A victory in Iraq will solve the nuclear crises in Iran and North Korea because they will not want to take on this awesome superpower and would rather negotiate with the United States . A victory in Iraq will allow the United States to recapture the glory it had during the Cold War. Finally, and most importantly, a victory in Iraq will fill the American people with pride and optimism about the future of this great nation.

I must apologize to my American brothers and sisters, but I cannot accept the notion of the United States quitting. We are Americans, and therefore, we do not give up when things get rough or when they do not go our way. Instead, we fight on until we are victorious. The reason the United States is the greatest civilization in the history of man is because we have persevered through the good and the bad and we have always stood as a nation of one. The majority of Americans supported this war at its beginning, yet since things have not gone our way, we are all abandoning our own country. If this is the case, maybe there is no longer an America worth fighting for.

Thank you for your well written article. Ironically, you addressed one issue that my dad (a WWII vet) has mentioned on several occasions; the number of casualties during the course of this war, not to minimize the impact of losing a loved one under any circumstances, but it does need to be put into perspective, as you did. Or, in another "comparative analysis" the press may want to compile stats on how many casualties we have suffered in the "war on drugs" or how many lives have been lost on America's highways. We are a great nation, I wonder why the media wants us to believe differently?

Wow! I wish I were capable of viewing the world in the simplistic black and white way you are! How much easier it would be to make decisions! Also, where do you get your facts? Terrorism will increase ten-fold? Who says, besides you, I mean...who says who knows anything about anything?
